For all of the Percy Jackson fans out there, be sure to check out Rick Riordan’s newest book, The Red Pyramid, available next week (May 4th). This is the first book in Riordan’s newest series, and the series focuses on Egyptian Mythology instead of Greek Mythology.

The library has already pre-ordered copies of the book, so if you’re interested, go to our catalog at www.aclibrary.org and place a hold for the book. The list gets longer every day so add your name today to ensure you get a copy as soon as possible.

If you’re looking for a series that you can read together as a family, Percy Jackson and the Olympians might work for you. There are five books in the series and they center around Percy Jackson, son of the Greek god, Poseidon and a mortal woman. The books are filled with adventure, mythology, teen awkwardness along with the added stress of being a demigod, and a great deal of humor thrown in.

I read a lot of children’s and teen books, but I have to say that I enjoyed this series far more than I expected to. I’d originally planned to just read the first book, but once I started reading, I had to finish the series.  The books got better as the series progressed and the humor works for both children, teens and adults. I would highly recommend reading these books, (suggested reading age is 9-12) even if you are an adult looking for a fun series.

The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer

Jack, a bard’s apprentice and his little sister begin a series of harrowing adventures when they are kidnapped by Viking “berserkers.”  Saved from death by his knowledge of magic and song writing, Jack determines to protect his little sister Lucy and somehow return home.  Jack misfires a spell (he causes the hair of Frith, the half-troll queen of King Ivar the Boneless,  to completely fall off) forcing Jack to undertake a quest to Jotunheim, home of the trolls,  to find Mimir’s Well and drink its magical water, reverse the bad spell and thus save Lucy from certain death.  Nancy Farmer is a great writer and this original fantasy is fun to read.

Jacket2JacketI recently saw that Derek Landy has a new Skulduggery Pleasant book out (recommended ages 8-12). The newest book in the series is called The Faceless Ones. I just picked it up this week and am hoping it is as good as the two previous titles. If you’ve never heard of the books before, you may want to check them out. They have all the right ingredients for a good read: magic, a walking/talking skeleton, evil about to destory the world, a young girl as the adventuresome sidekick and lots of humor.

The first title in the series is Skulduggery Pleasant and the second is Skulduggery Pleasant: Playing with Fire. Both are quick reads and fairly amusing for adults and kids will enjoy the humor and all the fights between the good guys and evil.
