The Newark Library held a program about the Spiderwick Chronicles on Friday Feb. 1st. We learned about how to repel fairy magic, how to detect if there are fairies in your neighborhood, how to make riddles and maps, and lots more. It was a lot of fun for all, even those that had never read the series. If you are one of many who have never read the series, let me encourage you now to read them! The movie arrives in theaters next week and looks promising. The books are easy to read and fairly short.

The books focus on the lives of the Grace children, Jared, Simon and Mallory and their encounters with the fantastical world. The children find a field guide which gives them insight into the intertwined worlds, but also puts them in danger as the powers of evil search for the guide. The stories are fast-paced and full of excitement and adventure, sure to intrigue even the most uninterested of readers. Who could resist swordfights, dragons, magic, goblins, river trolls and shapeshifters that can take on any shape, including your own?
