The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer

Jack, a bard’s apprentice and his little sister begin a series of harrowing adventures when they are kidnapped by Viking “berserkers.”  Saved from death by his knowledge of magic and song writing, Jack determines to protect his little sister Lucy and somehow return home.  Jack misfires a spell (he causes the hair of Frith, the half-troll queen of King Ivar the Boneless,  to completely fall off) forcing Jack to undertake a quest to Jotunheim, home of the trolls,  to find Mimir’s Well and drink its magical water, reverse the bad spell and thus save Lucy from certain death.  Nancy Farmer is a great writer and this original fantasy is fun to read.
