School starts next week and that means children will be heading off to kindergarten for the first time. Here’s a book and craft you can share with your kindergartener or any child who loves art and stories about pets.

Eliza’s Kindergarten Pet is about a little girl who is apprehensive about the class pet, a guinea pig named Cookie. Cookies shouldn’t have teeth, Eliza thinks; teeth that can bite. But when Cookie gets lost, Eliza is worried in spite of herself. Will Eliza overcome her fear and help find the beloved class pet? Check out the book from the Newark Library to find out!

You can make your very own Cookie! Using a guinea pig template printed on brown card stock, a wiggle eye, and black pom poms.
