Join us on Saturday, October 30th from 2-4 pm to make a Halloween pumpkin! Ignatius Hoh will be here to teach us how to make these pumpkins using origami techniques. He will also show us how to make paper cranes. The paper cranes will then be donated to a needy child at the Oakland Children’s Hospital.

This is a free program and everyone is invited. Young children will need the assistance of an adult.

We made these easy pumpkins today at the library. You’ll need just a few basic supplies to get started:

  • Cardstock or printer paper (we used orange, but it depends on what color you want your pumpkin to be)
  • 2 brads of any color a pumpkin leaf (you can find a free template online and resize it to fit your pumpkin)
  • scissors
  • small hole punch
Step 1: cut your paper into 1″ strips (the strips in the photo are 4.25″ long and 1″ wide). You will need 8 strips.
Step 2: cut out your leaf.
Step 3: Stack your strips together. Punch a hole on either side of the strips (punch through the stack held together). Punch a hole in your leaf as well.
Step 4: Keeping your stack of papers together, put a brad through the holes on one side of the stack. Before adding the brad to the second set of holes, add your leaf to the top of the pile. Attach your second bard.
Step 5: Very carefully fan out your paper strips to form the circular pumpkin shape. Viola! You have a very cute paper pumpkin to put up in the house.
Make a few and attach to a string to make a cute garland for Halloween!

Join us for our fall craft on Saturday, September 11th at 11 am. Please be aware that if you do not arrive by 11:45 am, you will not be able to participate in the craft. The craft runs from 11 am – 12 pm. We will be making paper strip pumpkins, which look wonderful when completed and are super easy to put together. Young children will need an adult helper to assemble the craft.

This craft is made possible with the generous support of the Newark Library League. Please consider joining the Newark Library League – your  continued support means that the library can continue to provide quality programs to the public for free.
