To tie in with their Summer Fun Days and the theme of “Earth & Nature Week” the Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center is hosting a Recycling Poster Contest. Children ages 4-12 should design an original 8.5X11 poster about recycling. Three posters will be chosen to be displayed at the Silliman Center, and the artists will be recognized at a ceremony at a city council meeting and will receive a 2012-2013 Silliman Center Season Pass. The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 10th.

For more information and complete contest rules, visit the city of Newark’s website.

We will be making these Happy Suns out of paper plates on Thursday 7/12 at 3:30pm in the Meeting Room. We hope to see you there! If you can’t come, the instructions are below so you can make one from home.

Supplies:
Yellow paper plate
Orange construction paper
Wiggle eyes
Yellow pom pom
Yarn (yellow and/or orange)
Glitter glue
Glue
Hole punch

This is a fun, simple craft all ages can do. First, start with a yellow paper plate (you can also paint a white plate) and punch holes around the outside edge. Then cut two circles from orange construction paper and glue them to the plate, and glue the wiggle eyes onto the paper. The yellow pom pom is glued on for the nose, and the glitter glue makes a nice smile. Cut 6-in. pieces of yellow and orange yarn to tie around the outside of your sun. Now you have a happy sun to celebrate summer!
