Newark teens have a lot to look forward to in March! The library’s Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day bake sale on Wednesday, March 17th (and don’t forget to wear green!) and a Super Smash Brothers tournament after hours on Saturday, March 13th (pre-registration is required since the program starts after the library closes). TAG also has bimonthly meetings, Tuesday March 9th and 23rd from 6:30-8 pm. If you are interested in joining TAG, please stop by at one of our meetings or call (510) 795-2627 for more information.

We also have a reading club for 9-13 year olds on Friday, March 26th at 3:30 pm and Stitch and Inch (a knitting club that meets twice a month on Saturdays and loves having new members attend, of any age).

Join us tomorrow (February 19th) at 12 pm in the Meeting Room for Toddler Art. Children ages 2-4 are welcome to join us for a fun art project. Tomorrow we will be playing with ink pads and making fingerprint art. Please wear clothing that can get dirty as we often make a mess! (Parents and children should wear clothes that can get dirty).

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Craft last Thursday night. It was a great success and everyone that attended seemed to have a good time. We made tiger masks and decorated paper dragons for Chinese New Year and made flower-shaped Valentine’s with a lollipop center.

We have a fun program to encourage a love of art in young children. It’s called Toddler Art and it happens on the 3rd Friday of the month, September through May at 12 pm. Sometimes we are outside and the other times we meet in the Meeting Room of the Newark Library. This program is free and we encourage families with young children interested in fun art projects to attend. We do ask that parents and their children wear clothing that can get dirty as we often make a mess. Most projects include painting of some kind. For more information, please contact Mary Ayers at (510) 795-2627 ext 15 or email at mcayers@aclibrary.org. Toddler Art is possible by the generous support of the Newark Library League.

The new movie version of Alice in Wonderland is coming soon to a theater near you (release date is March 5, 2010). This past weekend, families enjoyed an Alice in Wonderland program at the Newark Library. We had many craft projects set up, including white rabbit magnets, Queen of Hearts wands, tea cup cards, playing card people, a crossword puzzle and tea bag folding (for teens and adults). Everyone had a great time and the crafts looked fabulous!

We are currently displaying several panels of posters from the book What the World Eats. The book is very interesting, showcasing 25 families around the world and what each family eats in one week. The differences in money and amounts of food are astounding. There are several copies of this book in our library system. Take the time to check one out; you won’t be disappointed.

What the World Eats by Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluisio
