wearing that to schoolIt’s almost back to school — some for the first time. A new book to share with your little people just starting school is You’re Wearing That to School?! by Lynn Plourde and Illustrated by Sue Cornelison. Penelope the hippo is so excited to start school but her best friend Tiny the mouse tries to temper her enthusiasm, giving her suggestions for how to fit in on her first day. Luckily she doesn’t listen to him and finds her uniqueness, rather than being just like everyone else, is what makes friends. The last page includes tips to make children more comfortable on the first day of school.

Making a drawstring bag is “not as easy as it looks” (p. 3), nor is making friends or learning Chinese. Anna Wang spends fourth grade escaping in books as she struggles to become more comfortable in her relationships and cultural identity. The difficult topics of friendship and divorce are tackled at a level that is appropriate for younger and older children alike. Black and white illustrations convey the emotion of the characters and highlight significant objects and book covers. A Pronunciation Guide offers the translation, transliteration, and Chinese character for significant vocabulary. Instructions for making a drawstring bag are illustrated on the back cover.
