Newark, at one time, had tall strands of tules and cattails that created a wetland that was full of life. It was home to many animals and birds. Children will create tule rope and explore the organisms that live in the mud flat (shells). Readings: Phoca the Traveling Harbor Seal, and Murder in the Mud. Come and join this free, drop-in, educational program on July 24th from 2-2:45 at Newark Library.

Summer is off to a great start … by MaryA

Newark Library has been busy, busy, busy so far this summer! We’ve had lots of kids and teens signing up to play one of the reading games.  We have performers every Saturday afternoon at 2 pm (fun for the whole family, and they are free!) This upcoming Saturday, July 17th we welcome The Alphabet Rockers! Check out their website for more details on the group: http://www.alphabetrockers.com/.

Art and Science Camp for 3rd to 5th graders is full and we had our first class the past Thursday. We worked on two art projects inspired by Jasper Johns’ work. You can read more about Johns and see some of his art at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/jasper-johns/about-the-painter/54/.

Friday was the first of seven craft programs for kids. Each Friday through August 13th we’ll have a new craft. Program starts at 11 am and is scheduled for an hour. Most of the projects take about 30 minutes to complete. The first Friday we made toilet paper octopi, and the kids were so creative in decorating their creatures. We had about 70 people attend, so we will hold the remaining programs inside the meeting room to accomodate everyone. No registration for these programs – just drop in! Young children need an adult helper for all crafts.
